Our History

Established in 1963 by Norman Moore and his son David, Norman had been a Director of Bedford & Gifford for over 15 years and started the business with a guillotine and press, costing £200. The company was first housed in an old ex-abattoir in Ludford St. off Welholme Road, rented from John Burkitt, Norman's pal and golfing partner. Eventually the company outgrew the premises and purchased a larger depot in South Parade near the old Grimsby General Hospital and next to South Parade School. In May 1990 ideal premises in King Edward Street came on the market, situated near the docks and central for town, these were purchased and have proved to be a major asset for the company, ideal for the passing fish van salesmen and situated close to the A180.

Norman was a professional footballer with Grimsby Town, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Bury, Aldershot, (during the war and just after, members of the armed forces could 'guest' for the nearest club to where they were stationed) he is best remembered as the Grimsby born Hull City centre forward who knocked Grimsby out of the Cup in 1949 and played alongside Raich Carter in the highest attended football match ever, at Boothferry Park in the match against Manchester United in 1948.Sadly Norman died in March 2007 at the age of 87. Joyce is keeping well and active on their farm with a few horses in North Lincs.

In the early 70's, Gill, Norman's daughter and her husband Andy joined the company from Lee's the furnishers where they had both been employed, Gill joined the sales force selling mainly on the markets at Scunthorpe ,Cleethorpes and Grimsby. Andy was involved with purchasing. They have both retired and are enjoying gardening and Gill is well known locally and nationally for her fuschias for which she has amassed a collection of prizes and many awards.

Steve Merriman joined David in the company when Gill and Andy retired in 1996 being involved in packaging for over 20years, an old friend of David's, (both sharing a love of motor racing) he is involved in buying and selling for the company and has recently fulfilled his ambition of gaining his Private Pilot's Licence and has a share in a light aircraft.

The company was closely involved with the fishing industry right from the start, with Norman's contacts at Hull and on Grimsby docks, supplying them with Vegetable Parchment and Wet Strength from Dixon's Paper Mill, and now polythene and high and low density films of all types. We pride ourselves in having a very broad base of customers from the fish salesman to the multinational company, being able to supply and deliver nationwide at short notice. With the decline of the fishing industry the company has had to diversify, although we still supply many of the well known factories and retailers in the fishing and food industry locally and, of course Hull, we send consignments as far afield as Fraserburgh in the north and Devon and Cornwall in the south. We also supply imported high class paper and polythene plain and printed carriers to fashion and shoe shops. We are also now stocking many items for the catering establishments, cafés, fish and chip shops, restaurants etc
